GE Dishwasher Leak Detected: Protect the Floor and Electrical Area First

Ge Dishwasher Leaking Water:

When a GE dishwasher shows a leak message or water appears underneath, stop the cycle and disconnect power until the source is found. GE says that if the unit beeps with LEAK DETECTED, the power should stay disconnected until it is repaired.

A leak-detected message or visible water under a dishwasher should be treated as a containment problem before it becomes a parts problem. The first job is to stop additional water and keep it away from electrical connections.

Safe External Checks

  • Stop the cycle if water is actively escaping.
  • Shut off the dishwasher water supply if that can be done safely and leakage continues.
  • Dry only accessible floor/cabinet surfaces without reaching into energized compartments.
  • Check your use-and-care manual to see which protection system your dishwasher has, since the display and the response differ.
Symptom What it can point to What you can safely check
Water under the unit with suds visible Wrong or excess detergent, or spilled liquid rinse aid Power off, let suds fade, and wipe rinse aid spills right away
Water from the cabinet beside the dishwasher A shut-off valve or a loose hose clamp, which GE calls the most likely cause Look at each hose in the cabinet and secure its clamp
Drips at the door after installation A door gasket still seating, or the panel edge touching the cabinet Run several full cycles and reposition the unit if the panel touches the cabinet
Leak at the top corner of the door on a vented model A loose vent cap Hand tighten the cap
LEAK DETECTED or 999 A possible leak; the dishwasher will not start on Floor Protect with Alert models Disconnect power and book service

GE-Specific Context

GE dishwashers can use consumer messages such as `C1–C8`, `FTD`, `F56`, `H2O`, `PrS`, `LEAK DETECTED`, and model-family-specific F-codes. Some displays such as delay hours are status messages rather than repair faults. Describe the cycle stage—fill, wash, drain, heat/dry, or start/control—because that determines which technical family is relevant.

How GE Leak Protection Works

GE offers several systems. Floor Protect uses a pan under the unit that catches small leaks up to 19 ounces, and larger leaks tilt the pan forward so water exits at the front where it is visible.

Floor Protect with Alert uses a moisture-sensor pan that shows LEAK DETECTED, cancels the cycle, and pumps out remaining tub water. Leak Defense with Active Flood Protect, introduced in Fall 2019 on Hidden Heater models, uses a pan that holds up to 56 ounces, and about 1.5 ounces of water trips the sensor in a level dishwasher.

On those models the water valve shuts, the pump runs, and a three-digit message appears with flashing lights and a tone. Connected units can send a SmartHQ app alert, and the sensor sits under the filter in place of a mechanical float.

Stop Conditions

If water reached wiring, an outlet, junction box, or control area, keep the dishwasher off until the leak source and electrical safety are addressed.

Other stop conditions include smoke, sparking, burning electrical odor, repeated breaker trips, persistent gas odor, uncontrolled overheating, or water contacting electrical connections. Do not bypass safety devices or open internal electrical, gas, sealed-refrigeration, or microwave high-voltage areas.

Water That Is Not Really a Leak

Warm moist air leaving during drying and draining is normal on models with external vents. GE also says new dishwashers may need several full wash cycles to seat the door gasket.

Light gray gasket models have black corner baffles at the front inside lower tub corners, and a missing or damaged one is worth confirming. Black tub-mounted gasket models do not have them.

An air gap, where fitted, is separate plumbing, and GE describes it as a code-required plumbing device that is not part of the dishwasher itself. To clean it, set the latch to OFF, lift the cover, remove the cap, clear debris, and reattach. If leaking continues, a plumber may be needed.

Installation and Service Context

Leave built-in, stacked, or tightly fitted appliances installed unless the service team specifically requests access. Moving an appliance without a plan can disturb flooring, cabinetry, gas, water, drain, vent, or electrical connections and create a second problem.

The technician should reproduce the symptom or use your observations to select a narrow test path. That may involve comparing sensor readings, fan or pump commands, control output, airflow, water flow, ignition behavior, or stored diagnostics. The goal is to replace only what testing supports.

What to Record Before Service

Write down:
– complete GE model number;
– exact symptom in one sentence;
– when it began;
– whether it is constant or intermittent;
– what related function still works normally;
– any displayed code/message before reset;
– any recent power, water, gas, venting, cleaning, filter, or installation event.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not clear codes before documenting them, do not order a part because another GE owner had a similar symptom, and do not apply one code meaning across unrelated appliance families. Some GE displays are status or operating messages rather than repair faults.

One controlled owner-level check is useful when it answers a question. Repeating resets or disassembling the appliance usually removes evidence rather than adding it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I reset the appliance before service?

One normal manual-approved reset can be useful after a temporary control interruption. Record the code or display state first. If the same symptom returns, repeated resets are not a repair.

Should I buy a part from the symptom alone?

Usually no. Similar symptoms can come from different components, installation conditions, or external utilities.

Can I remove panels to inspect wiring or controls?

No. Keep homeowner checks external and model-appropriate.

Why does my GE dishwasher show LEAK DETECTED when the floor is dry?

The sensor trips on a small amount of water, and about 1.5 ounces can trigger it on Leak Defense models. Leave power disconnected and book service for the cause.

Can too much detergent cause a leak?

Yes. GE says wrong or excess detergent produces suds that can push water out of the tub. Power off and let the suds fade, which can take several hours.

What if the water is coming from the cabinet next to the dishwasher?

GE says a shut-off valve or, most likely, a loose hose clamp may be the source. Examine each hose in the cabinet and secure its clamp.
